Another Alexander's photo

Hello!
I am asking for help for the kindest young man in the world, our son Alexander Sheligan. When he was 18, he got sick with a terrible disease, acute leukemia.
Alexander is a 2nd year student at Chita State University. From the time he was a kid, he was active in sports, gymnastics and wrestling. He studied well and even completed a course at Information Technology College in parallel with high school. After he enrolled into college, he was active in union work. Alexander is a very kind and responsive person, and even at the hospital everyone loves him.
Unfortunately, his remission only lasted 8 months. Alexander had a recurrence of his disease and he needs bone marrow transplantation, based on recommendation of the specialists from Raisa Gorbacheva Institute for Pediatric Hematology & Transplantology. The operation requires an unrelated donor (Alexander's sister did not match as a donor), the search for whom is very expensive. For us, state employees, this amount is out of reach.
We would like to ask everyone to help us save our son!

Bill for the donor search in Germany
Medical conclusion

Update as of April 14, 2009. A donor for Sasha was found, transplantation is scheduled for May 12. Only 5,316 euros of the 15,000 were paid to the registry; the money for the transplant delivery has not been raised either.

Update as of April 27, 2009. Sasha's parents raised money for delivery of transplant, and our fund paid off their debt to Morsch registry using donations sent to all patients. Sasha will come to St. Petersburg at the beginning of May.

Update as of May 12, 2009. Sasha arrived to St. Petersburg and was hospitalized at BMT clinic.

Update as of June 3, 2009. It has been three weeks since transplantation. Sasha was transferred out of sterile zone. His blood counts are growing, but he keeps running high temperature. He is planned to undergo CT scan. Since the Institute's tomograph is currently broken, the test has to be paid for.

Update as of July 1, 2009. Sasha recovered after transplantation and was transferred for outpatient monitoring. Based on CT scan results, he was prescribed Vfend.

Update as of July 15, 2009. Sasha's cytomegalovirus infection re-activated and he was prescribed Valcyte. A course of treatment costs 45,000 rubles.

Update as of August 23, 2009. Sasha was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia and he is receiving therapy with antibiotics. He still needs Vfend as well. After the course of treatment and control CT scan, he is planned to receive donor's lymphocyte infusion.

Update as of September 8, 2009. Sasha continues antibacterial and anti-fungal therapies. The doctors are planning to biopsy the lesions in his lungs that were discovered during CT scan.

Update as of October 1, 2009. Sasha developed problems with breathing. He was put on artificial lung ventilation in intensive care unit.

Update as of October 13, 2009. Sasha was taken off artificial lung ventilation. He is breathing on his own, and feels better. To continue his therapy, Sasha urgently needs Cancidas (14 bottles, for the cost of 200,000 rubles) and Tazobactam (a course costs 1,000 euros).

Update as of October 26, 2009. Sasha's condition is improving gradually, and infiltrate is clearing from his lungs. Sasha still needs Cancidas and Pulmozyme.
For now, Sasha cannot get up due to difficulty breathing, but he does physical therapy, uses Internet for staying in touch and wants to overcome all difficulties.

Update as of November 13, 2009. Sasha's condition improved markedly, and he is already walking along the hospital hallways. In the near future he may be allowed to travel home, and in that case he will need to bring Vfend along, at least 2-3 packages. His lungs are in much better state. Sasha is in remission in regards to leukemia.

Update as of November 19, 2009. Sasha feels well! His lungs are clear, but the lungs have scar tissue and it causes fibrosis and shortness of breath. The fewer scars he has, the better he can breathe.
On November 22nd we will travel home. Three months later we will return for the scheduled tests. Sasha still needs antifungal therapy with Vfend (200 mg twice a day).
