My name is Dima Ivanov. I am 26. The story of my disease goes back to January
2007. It was then that I first had a severe pain in my stomach. I was taken
to hospital with pancreatitis as a diagnosis. The diagnosis proved to be wrong.
Computed tomography made the doctors arrive at a different one: splenic infarction,
as the result my spleen was removed. However no one could tell what the reason for
the infarction was. The blood test showed that there was a huge amount of platelets
in the blood: 3,000,000. For a long time I kept moving from one hospital to
another while the doctors were trying to find the reason for my condition.
Different versions were considered, but there was no definite diagnosis.
In January 2008 I was finally diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis. I started
to be treated with Reaferon which had no effect to speak of. In February 2008 I
had a myocardial infarction. But nothing was changed in the treatment tactics.
In May 2008 I had the second transmural myocardial infarction. I celebrated my
25th birthday in an intensive care unit. More complex examinations revealed a
Reaferon intolerance. Hydrea was prescribed instead of it. This drug decreases
the platelet count but does not cure the disease. It is highly probable that
it might cause the development of other oncological diseases. A short while ago
I was diagnosed with splenic vein and portal vein thrombosis.
I have recently got married, I want to have children and have confidence in
the future, knowing I will be able to take care of my family.
But in order to overcome my disease I need a course of peginterferon alpha
treatment. The course costs 250,000 roubles. As I am sick there is no chance I
can earn that much money. That is why I am kindly asking for your help. Thank

Update as of August 26, 2009.
Dmitry is taking Pegasys medication that we purchased using donations
sent to all patients. His condition improved significantly, except for
higher temperature on the days he takes the medication.
Update as of October 2, 2009.
Dmitry feels much better. On Tuesday he started a course of therapy at
sanatorium. He still needs Pegasys.
Update as of December 29, 2009.
Dima is now almost well, except for moderate temperature and
temporary sickness (once or twice in three weeks). But this is nothing
compared to 3-4 months ago. We are hoping Dima will recover soon.

Dima is continuing to take Pegasys. He again has a side effect
due to therapy – heightened temperature.
Update as of March 26, 2010.
Dima feels well and his liver indicators are normal. His temperature
goes back to normal after taking analgesics. Dima continues therapy with
Pegasys.
Update as of July 3, 2010.
Dima is now at the hospital where he is undergoing planned tests to
evaluate Pegasys therapy. He feels well and it is likely the therapy
will be canceled. Dima is currently receiving the drug at the hospital.
