Hello!
My name is Katerina. I am 17. I live in Neftekamsk, the Republic of Bashkortostan. I finished school this year and entered the Udmurtia State University, Department of International Economics. I am the only child in the family.
Last winter I noticed that my health got much worse. I had constant colds, dizziness and nosebleeds. In April 2008 I was diagnosed with acute myeloblastic leukemia. A course of severe medical treatment followed right away. Remission was achieved after the first course. Then there were another 2 chemotherapy courses.
In November 2008 my parents and I came to St. Petersburg for a consultation at the Raisa Gorbacheva Institute of Children Hematology and Transplantology. I was recommended to undergo a course of high-dose chemotherapy in my town with further possible storage of autologous stem cells.
As high-dose chemotherapy cannot be administered in my town my mother and I had to return to the Raisa Gorbacheva institute June. Later on the doctors told us that one course would not be enough to make sure the result is lasting.
In August I have to come to the institute again for another course. Last time we exhausted all our savings. My mother was on unpaid leave as she was looking after me, and my father was the only wage earner. Our relatives and friends helped us raise the money. Now I am asking for help with finding and paying for the lodging and drugs that I will need. With God's help it's going to be the last stage of my treatment and I'll be able to study and work again.
We thank everybody who responds to our request and helps us.

Update as of September 25, 2009. Katya completed a course of high-dosage chemotherapy and was discharged for outpatient monitoring. She is now waiting for the results of puncture to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Afterwards, a decision will be made whether Katya will undergo stem cells collection.

Update as of October 6, 2009. On October 5, Katya's stem cells were collected for storage and subsequent bone marrow transplantation. On October 7 we will go home. We are thankful to Advita Fund for their help with buying expensive medications and paying for rented apartment.

Update as of January 10, 2010. Katya underwent transplantation 33 days ago, but her blood counts are still low. With all that, she feels well, has a good appetite, and even goes out for walks with her mom.
Unfortunately, due to low leukocytes and platelets, the doctors are not allowing Katya to discharge.
On Monday she may need to go for trepanobiopsy.

Update as of January 28, 2010. Autologous transplantation was successful. Katya had already recovered and she feels well. She is at the hospital for now, but if the control test results are good, she will be allowed to go home.

Update as of February 16, 2010. Today Katya was discharged home. She is doing well after autologous transplantation: she is in complete remission. For now, Katya has not fully recovered. Her hemoglobin count is 89, platelets – 47 and leukocytes – 3. She will be monitored by the hematologist locally until her complete recovery.
In May of this year we will return for examination. We are hoping that this is the last stage of treatment. We are grateful to everyone who supported us financially and emotionally.
We are thankful to Advita fund for their help. We are wishing everyone to stay healthy and well.
