Hello!
Dear friends! My name is Galina Zhuikova. I live in Udmurtiya. Please help my son if you can. My son
Igor Zhuikov is 37. He has a good family, wife and two daughters (3 and 5 years old), and a good job.
My son has a college degree and he enjoyed playing sports (soccer and volleyball) before he got sick.
In 2002 and 2005 he and his wife gave us two charming daughters. Unfortunately, instead of living a happy
life and enjoying his children, my son began having health problems. At the end of 2005, he started coming
home tired. He wanted to lie down and rest, while earlier he would go to train or take his daughters for a
walk. I was asking him about his health, but he was telling me that all is well, he just needed some
rest and everything will be fine. The periodic medical exam at his work also did not uncover anything.
Our son is not very talkative and does not like to complain. My husband and I decided to offer more help,
and we started taking our granddaughters to our place every evening and on the weekends. In February 2006
our son started feeling unwell. He had high temperature, cough and fatigue. The treatment was not
helping and then after another series of tests he was referred to hematologists with a diagnosis
of acute leukemia.
For six months, our son could barely move around his apartment, and once he got a little better he was sent
for cytogenetic test in Kirov, as it is not offered in our republic. After we received the test results,
Igor was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.
Our son received second disability group and was prescribed chemotherapy with Glivec for six more months.
Igor is a very resilient person. By that time, he felt a little better, so he refused the designation of
II disability group and asked for a third instead (to be able to receive Glivec), then went back to work.
Glivec is a very expensive medication and costs 120,000–180,000 rubles a month, depending on the dosage.
It has to be taken without interruption. After six months, we were told to go back to Kirov for another
cytogenetic test to control the treatment progression. At that time, the malignant cells were still
present, but Igor was doing better. For that reason, the Glivec dosage was increased and extended for another
six months. We thought Igor was in a stable condition. However, six months later, instead of expected
good results we were told that some new malignant cells appeared.
We were referred for a consultation in St. Petersburg where everything was re-checked and confirmed. We are
now told that Igor needs bone marrow transplantation, and the sooner the better. It costs a lot of money, which
we do not have. In two years since our son got sick everything we had is now gone. Although the treatment
itself was free, the medication was not always available, and periodically we had to buy it. All the trips
to the hospitals also used up significant funds. In addition, we paid for many tests. For example, typing
cost us 15,000 rubles.
We now need to pay 15,000 euros for the search for the donor at the international bone marrow donor registry.
The delivery of transplant costs additional 2,500 euros. Also, transfusions cost 70,000 – 80,000 rubles, while
the lodging and living expenses in St. Petersburg after the transplantation will amount to 100,000 rubles.
Please help our son! With that, you will also help two of his little daughters and my husband and I. We are
now in our 60s.
With much respect and hope,
Galina Zhuikova
