Hello!
My name is Lena, I am 21. After I graduated from high school with honors,
I came to St. Petersburg from a town in Far North and enrolled in two colleges
at once. The first two years were very difficult. I studied and worked
at the same time to pay for my apartment rent.
In November 2006 I got sick with acute myeloblastic leukemia. After several courses
of very harsh chemotherapy, I had unrelated bone marrow transplantation on
March 4, 2007.
My relatives and my town's residents spent colossal efforts to find the funds
for the search and activation of the bone marrow donor in Germany. It has been
three months since the transplantation. I am now back at the BMT clinic
with worsening of GVHD (graft versus host disease) and a high count of
cytomegalovirus. I constantly need to take very expensive medications,
such as Valcyte (a package costs 70,000 rubles and lasts two months), Vfend
(a package costs 29,000 rubles and lasts 1 week) and Cancidas (one ampoule
costs 16,000 rubles).
I would like to ask everyone for help. It is needed urgently! I am enormously
grateful to everyone who responds!
Update as of July 30, 2007.
Lena's blood protein fell and she also has kidney problems. She urgently needs 7
bottles of Albumin that cost 1,200 rubles each.
While Lena is at the hospital and cannot open a bank account, please send your
donations to AdVita fund's bank account.
Update as of August 1, 2007.
Lena has high cytomegalovirus counts and she needs to take 2 capsules of Valcyte a
day. The cost of a monthly course is 65,000 - 70,000 rubles.
Update as of August 5, 2007.
We are sincerely grateful to the management of ILAN pharmacy and Lidia Moniava for help
with purchasing and delivering of Valcyte for Lena. We would also like to thank
Lena's supporters for paying for this medication. We were able to buy it much cheaper
than expected (for 57,000 rubles).
Lena was discharged from the hospital for a few days.
Update as of August 14, 2007.
Lena had a planned puncture. She still has high temperature from time to time, and she is very fatigued. She
continues to take Valcyte and antifungal drugs.
Update as of August 27, 2007.
Lena is feeling better. She and her grandmother, Svetlana Maximovna, are sincerely grateful to all their supporters!
Unfortunately, Lena is still not feeling well enough to go to the bank and receive the detail of the bank account deposits.
As of today, we can only tell that she had received 14,000 rubles in total. Thank you very much for supporting Lena!
Update as of October 22, 2007.
Lena feels relatively well and has minimal GVHD symptoms. She now constantly needs
to purchase Diflucan (for 9,000 rubles a month) and Heptral (3 packages a
month for 1,000 rubles each).
Update as of January 24, 2008.
Lena urgently needs a package of Cellcept (500 mg). She is currently unable to get
it for free at the pharmacies.
Update as of April 18, 2008.
Lena's skin GVHD worsened. She needs 4 bottles of Mabtera (500 mg) for the total
cost of 180,000 rubles.
Update as of November 7, 2008.
Lena was urgently hospitalized at the Ear, Nose & Throat unit of Mariinskaya
hospital due to acute antritis and sinusitis. Due to chronic GVHD Lena has low
immunity and cannot stay in a shared room. She needs financial support to pay
for stay in a private room, current medications and testing.
Update as of April 14, 2009
Lena is at home, she is getting ambulatory treatment for the chronic GVH reaction.
She constantly needs Vfend, 200 mg twice a day, one pack of Vfend costs some
25,000 roubles and lasts for a week.
Update as of August 4, 2009.
Lena was recently discharged from Mechnikov hospital where she underwent
treatment for phlebitis. It is still difficult for her to walk. However,
she had significantly improved in regards to GVHD due to good response
to therapy with Gleevec. Lena still needs Vfend and help with renting an
apartment.
Update as of Februarty 24, 2010:.
On February 15th I had planned examination. The remission was
confirmed and I feel well. I continue taking Vfend and Glivec with
Prograf to control skin GVHD. I am studying for the exams at
Engineering and Economics College (5th year).
Lena
Update as of June 29, 2010.
In May I had a consultation with Prof. Afanasiev, and I was taken off
Prograf. However, I still take 100 mg of Glivec a day. On June 21 I had
a consultation with Prof. Klimko at Mycology Research Institute and
it was decided to keep me on Vfend until Glivec therapy is over,
since I still have a small cavity in my left lung after aspergillosis
infection in 2008, which predisposes me to an infection.
In general, I feel well and I am now taking exams at the college.
