Hello!
I am the father of Masha Rozhdestvenskaya, my name is Vadim.
My daughter is 18 months. She used to be a healthy baby and has never even
been sick with a cold.
Trouble came unexpectedly: my wife and I went to a party, and when we were
back we found Masha with a high fever and vomiting. Her grandmother told us
that Masha complained of a pain in her legs. Of course she complained the
way she could, in her baby language.
No one knows why that happens and how that can be avoided.
What followed was two weeks in the Novgorod Infectious Diseases Hospital -
pyretic drugs, antibiotics, injections, and liters of blood for tests.
We tried our best po conceal the preliminary diagnosis from Masha's mother,
although she could not but suspect what the matter was since she saw Masha
slipping away in her arms. All this time we were hoping that the diagnosis
would not be confirmed.
We were transferred to the St. Petersburg Institute of Children's Hematology
and Transplantology where Masha managed to achieve a remission - that is the
first stage of a lengthy and complicated process of leukemia treatment.
Masha is a very good girl, she understands everything and tries her best to
be a good patient.
It hurts us to realize that the success of the treatment depends on whether
or not the hospital has antibiotics, anti-fungal and antiviral drugs, donor
blood and even such simple items as sterile gloves, catheters and extension
tubes for them.
All those things are required for the treatmenp in huge numbers. This or
that drug may be needed urgently, and it is impossible to say what the need
for next week will be. The drugs and expendables are imported. It has always
been hard to get all that, and now that the currency exchange rate has grown
it is even harder.
I am grateful to our doctors, charity funds and each and every one of those
who help us make Masha healthy again.
We pray and hope that Masha will recover and come back home together with
her mother. Her brother Egor cannot wait to see her again.

Update as of May 25, 2009.
Masha needs intravenous Vfend, a bottle a day, for at least two weeks.
Each bottle costs 5,000 rubles.
Update as of May 27, 2009.
The therapy with Vfend was extended indefinitely.
Masha may need Vfend for several more months.
Update as of June 3, 2009.
Masha can already take Vfend in capsules, at 200
mg a day dosage. She needs two packages with 14 ampoules a month, for the
total cost of 50,000 rubles. Vfend will be needed for the length of
intensive chemotherapy, close to 6 months. She also needs constant
injections of Intraglobin at 50 mg a day dosage.
Update as of June 15, 2009.
On June 9th Igor and Irina purchased 14-day supply of Vfend for Masha
for the total cost of 31,000 rubles.
Masha finished the second course of hormonal therapy and on Monday,
June 15th, she continued chemotherapy.
Masha and her mother live at the rented apartment and every day
come to the Institute for the procedures and examination. This way it
is less risky to pick up infections from other kids. Masha's blood
test results even allowed us to bring in Masha's brother, Egor,
to see her for three days. Masha was very happy to see him, but was
sad after his departure (and we too, of course).
Natasha (Masha's mom) and I are thanking you and everyone who
is helping us!

Update as of July 6, 2009.
Maria's central catheter was removed. The doctors are considering
installing an alternative device. A medication to protect liver
function was added to the course of treatment due to some indications.
For now, the treatment protocol stays the same: Masha receives
chemotherapy at home and for the other special medications and
tests she visits the Institute.
Masha's brother Egor turned 5 and we celebrated his birthday.
Egor is already a big boy and he does not get upset when Masha
takes his toys. Masha was very happy to see him.
We are sincerely grateful to everyone who helps us! Every new name
on the list of our supporters helps to lift our mood, support
us and make us feel optimistic!

Update as of July 23, 2009.
Masha is undergoing another course of chemotherapy, the treatment
is proceeding according to the plan. She still needs Vfend.
Update as of August 4, 2009.
Masha's temperature rose and the doctors are looking for the infection
source. Masha urgently needs Tazocin.
Update as of August 18, 2009.
Recently Mashenka turned 2. In six months of therapy that she
spent at the Institute, Masha grew taller, started talking and made
friends with the kids and Institute's personnel. Her own doctors and
nurses Masha already calls by name, although with her own pronunciation.
Masha is very sociable. She does not yet understand the difference
in living and non-living objects, so she tells "Good morning"
and "Bye-bye" to her parents, as well as chubby baby's
photo in the hall and a radio tower outside the window.
Masha loves to pretend she is a doctor. She regularly washes
catheters for her dolls (all of whom she named Katya) - this is
called "washing kolokochiki", changes bandages - "will glue over",
gives shots in the dolls' bottoms - "don't cry, it does not hurt",
measures saturation - "crocodiley" and listens to their
chests with stethoscope - "breathenotbreathe".
When her blood counts are normal, Masha goes out to a playground.
She also likes "Good night, little kids" TV program and
Luntik cartoons, like other kids.
Soon after her birthday, Masha developed a complication. The
situation was very serious. With God's help, the doctors managed to
take infection under control and overcome the complication.
I am grateful to everyone who responded to our request to help locate
a hard-to-find medication. The therapy Masha received at the hospital
produced positive dynamic and Tazocin was not needed, but your
responsiveness was very important to us.
Masha and her mom are now at the Institute department where they are
undergoing another re-induction course.
Dear friends, thank you for your care and help.
All the best,
Vadim, Masha's father
