Hello!
My son Nikas Kossov is now two years and eight months old. He got sick in
September 2008. For two months the doctors could not arrive at a diagnosis.
The boy was in a lot of pain, he could not urinate on his own and had to get
a urinary catheter - as it turned out, a tumor was pressing at his bladder.
At the time we were admitted to City Hospital 31 for examination and
treatment my son's condition was already very grave. Nikas spent almost two
months at an intensive care unit, he lost much weight so that his face was
just eyes that were not the eyes of a child any more, he could not eat and
was getting nutrition through a catheter - in a word, it was all very scary.
We are very grateful to the doctors who chose a treatment protocol that
helped; after a few chemotherapy courses Nikas got better: the tumor
decreased in size by 70%.
Now the rest of the tumor needs to be removed. But the location of the tumor
is very hard to reach, it is close to the urethra, and even a tiny mistake
during the surgery can make our son an invalid for life... Luckily, the
doctors of the University Clinic of Tubingen (Germany) agreed to perform
the surgery. They will have to remove the rest of the tumor and the lung
deposits.
The two surgeries will cost some 36,000 euros. Our family does not have such
money: I do not work at the moment, and we also have a daughter, so we will
not afford that on our own. And the surgery is urgent. Please help us raise
that sum!
Thank you all so much. God bless you.
Update as of April 4, 2009.
Please do not transfer the money for the treatment of Nikas to the fund's
bank account: the fund does not have a contract with the clinic, so we
kindly ask everyone to transfer donations to the personal account of
Nikas' grandmother or via e-wallets, paypal, moneybookers.
Update as of April 4, 2009.
We are sincerely grateful to Aif-Kind Heart fund for guaranteeing payment
of the bill for the surgery! On April 15th Nikas should be in the clinic,
and the operation is scheduled for April 17th.
Update as of April 11, 2009.
Nikas was a little sick and had fever. Now he is getting back to normal.
He is getting ready to fly on a plane to Germany. Nikas really wants to
get treated and get well. This little boy has big plans for the future.
In summer, he plans to go to dacha. Nikas loves to care for plants there
and go into the woods.
The most important thing is to raise the amount necessary for the operation
so that Nikas recovers and sees his dreams come true. We are very thankful
to everyone who responded to us. In our cruel world, there are so many
kindhearted and good people. Thank you very much!

Update as of April 17, 2009.
Nikas's relatives sent us a report about donations that were either
sent to his grandmother's bank account or brought as cash. We will be able
to publish the complete listing with dates and amounts after Nikas's
grandmother returns from Germany.
We are sincerely grateful to Arkady and Tatiana Akopyan, Lyudmila Niferova,

Polyanskaya, Svetlana Vassilieva, Anna Kolimbet, Yulia Martusova, Alexander
Rosenblit, Tatiana Efimova, Lyudmila Zaitseva, and all our supporters
whose names we do not know.
Nikas's parents would also like to thank all the medical personnel of
Pediatric unit of Municipal hospital No. 31 for making Nikas's operation
possible.
In total, the following amounts were raised to pay for the visas, tickets,
lodging in Germany, services of a translator and further treatment:
- Cash received by Nikas's relatives: 249,200 rubles, $3,000 and 2,500 euros.
- Money sent to Nikas's grandmother's bank account: 58,300 rubles.
- Money sent by mail: 7,000 rubles.
On April 15th Nikas's and his grandmother flew to Germany. On April 16th he
underwent series of tests, which, fortunately, confirmed absence of deposits
in his lungs. On April 17th Nikas had surgery, during which all the remaining
tumor parts were removed except for the hard-to-reach mass. The doctors currently
have a theory that it could be benign in nature, so it was only biopsied.
Further treatment will be discussed after histology testing results are ready.
The operation went as planned, and Nikas is now in intensive care under the
doctors' watch.

Update as of April 27, 2009.
Nikas recovered after operation. He feels well and plays. The doctors are
waiting for the histology testing results to determine further treatment protocol.
Update as of May 12, 2009
Nikas returned to continue treatment in St. Petersburg. He feels well.
Based on histology testing results, Nikas was selected a chemotherapy
protocol.
Update as of July 10, 2009.
On June 29th Nikas celebrated his birthday. He turned 3. Nikas celebrated it
at the hospital. We are very thankful to AdVita fund volunteers for organizing
a celebration. We had clowns, balloons, cakes and lots of fun.
The same day Nikas started 8th course of chemotherapy. His blood counts started
to plummet, so he does not feel very well and eats little.
A few days ago, Nikas's little sister, Elechka, came to visit him. Their meeting
was very touching. They hugged and did not let each other go for a long time.
The little sister was asking Nikas to eat well so that he can
recover and go home.
However, he still needs some therapy left and Nikas is ready for that. He
understands that the most important thing is to get well. Nikas is no longer afraid
of the procedure room and keeps his cool around IV drips and pills.
He is used to them. But I don't wish this to anyone. This is very scary.

Update as of August 4, 2009.
Nikas received the final, 9th chemotherapy round under his protocol.
Once his blood counts rise, we will undergo testing. We believe that everything
is well and we'll get to go home. Overall, Nikas is feeling well: he plays and
learns writing his name. I would like to express my personal gratitude to the
medical personnel and AdVita fund volunteers for the enormous work they
did helping me save my son.
Nikas's mom
Update as of September 27, 2009.
Nikas is now at home on supporting therapy. Once a week he comes to the
hospital. On September 22nd, Nikas had PET imaging that showed he is doing
well. Nikas goes to the early development center where he studies natural
science. He is very happy that he can play with his sister.
Nikas's mom
Update as of December 24, 2009.
A prescheduled examination revealed a relapse. Since the tumor is very
hard to reach he will need a surgery in Germany, and since Nikas is too
little it is advisable to have radiation therapy there too. The
preliminary sum needed is 37,000 euros
(bill).
Please transfer funds not
to the fund's bank account but to the parents' personal accounts
or PayPal or the bank account of AdVita USA.
Update as of January 12, 2010.
Nikas is already in a clinic in Tubingen. He is undergoing planned MRI,
after which the details of the operation and radiation therapy will
be verified, as well as the cost of treatment. Surgery to remove the
tumor is scheduled for Monday.
Nikas's relatives paid a deposit to the clinic's account to make the
tests and planning for the operation possible.
Advita fund will transfer donations sent for Nikas as soon as we
recieve a bill from the clinic.
Update as of January 15, 2010.
Based on tomography test results, it was decided to administer
chemotherapy first to reduce the volume of surgery. Nikas will now
be installed Hickman catheter and on Tuesday he will start therapy.
After two chemotherapy cycles, he will undergo diagnostic tests
and decision regarding further treatment will be made (surgery
and radiation).
Additional bill will be received in the next few days.
