Hello!
My name is Olga, I am 20. I was born in Bakaly village in Bashkiria. My
mother and I live alone. My father died 8 years ago, and I am the only
child. I graduated from high school and in 2006 I enrolled into Bashkirsky
State Pedagogical University to study corrective psychology. At the end of
the first year, I started to notice increased fatigue, bleeding of my gums,
weight loss and loss of hair. Suddenly, my temperature would rise to 38C. I
thought it was a cold and tried to treat myself with fever-reducing medications
and antibiotics, but nothing was helping.
After a month and a half, I went to a clinic for students. There they noticed
changes in my blood and I was hospitalized at the infectious diseases hospital.
After a doctors' council, I was referred to Hematology Unit of Republic
hospital in Ufa. That's where I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic
leukemia. At first, I did not understand what it was, but when I learned
that it meant blood cancer, I was shocked. But I immediately thought that
I will live, and the new, strong medications will help me. My friends and
relatives supported me in this belief. I started the first chemotherapy
course in May 2007 and I achieved remission quickly. That way I completed
five courses of therapy.
In January 2008 I was diagnosed with a relapse. I was administered three
high-dosage chemotherapy cycles that led to a remission. Since May 2008 I
have been in remission and it feels like a miracle to me. In November 2008,
my mother and I came to R. Gorbacheva Hematology and Transplantology clinic
in St. Petersburg. As no unrelated donors were found for me, I was offered
transplantation of my own stem cells.
And then, in January 2009, we returned to St. Petersburg for stem cells
transplantation. We are running out of money, since my mom's salary is only
5,000 rubles a month, and we still need significant amount for medications
and lodging. My mom and I are asking for your support. Any amount of help
will be invaluable to us.
Update as of July 20, 2010.
Olya came for planned tests to Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology & Transplantology
Institute. She is doing well: her test results are normal and she is feeling great.
