Hello!
My name is Svetlana Ozerova. I would like to ask all good people to help me in
my grief. My husband Sergei is 29 years old. Sergei is a very intelligent and
interesting person, a caring husband and father, a good son, the life of any
party, and a hardworking person – a jack-of-all-trades. In a word, he is a
wonderful person. He's one of those people who are so hard to find. He finished
school with honors, he has always been independent pushing his way through life
on his own. He is an economist.
In the spring of 2008 Sergei began to feel a skin itching. We did not pay much
attention to it then, and constant colds and a hemorrhagic rash on the shoulders
did not arouse our suspicions either. We thought it would all disappear with
time, but it never did. By the end of the summer the itching became unbearable,
and Sergei went to a primary care physician. For almost two months he had been
examined by various doctors but no one could figure out what was going on with
him. Then he was recommended to see a hematologist, and everything became clear...
October 29, 2008 divided our life into "before" and "after". On
this day my honey came home and told me the terrible news: acute leukemia...
blood cancer... My whole world was ruined.
It is hard to describe our feelings at that time. Pain, horror, fear... But
we had to pull ourselves together and struggle for life.
I feel so awfully sorry for Sergei and his parents who all of a sudden grew
so old from grief. There was lots of crying, but there was a great joy too:
I learned that I was expecting a child we had so wanted for a long time. We worked
hard to make a cosy nest for ourselves and our future child.
November 1 marked the beginning of chemotherapy – three courses of 7+3 protocol
followed by HAM and two Hidac courses. The treatment was extremely hard. I was
running back and forth between work and hospital trying my best to support Sergei
and cheer him up with thoughts of our baby. The treatment resulted in a remission
but it did not last long. Unfortunately in January 2010 there was a relapse.
Sergei has a very complicated form of the disease, and that is myeloblastic leukemia:
the bad part is that the bone marrow produces two populations of cancer cells.
With this disease the only chance to survive is a non-relative bone marrow
transplantation. Unfortunately Sergei's brother cannot be his donor.
So we now need to raise 17,500 euros for the donor search in the international
registry and the transplant delivery. Both our parents and ourselves have
worked hard but this sum is still unaffordable for us. There are three doctors
in our family. Sergei's mother, Nina Fedorovna, has been working at the Ivnyansky
Regional Hospital as a maternity nurse for almost 40 years. She is well respected
in her neighborhood. My mother is also a maternity nurse, she has been working
at a rural health station for 30 years. I am a pharmaceutist at the Belgorod
Children's City Hospital drug store. At present I am on maternity leave. We
have devoted our lives to medicine, so have we not earned the right to help
our dear husband and son?! It is still way too early for him to die! He so longs
to live and enjoy life, to work and raise his son! So much to do yet!
Please HELP US SAVE SERGEI!!!
I hate to lose him!!!
His life now depends on your compassion!

Update as of March 26, 2010.
Serezha is now at the hospital. He underwent the second course of
chemotherapy under FLAGIda protocol. Unfortunately, the first course
did not result in remission, as Sergei had 13% of blasts in the
puncture sample. I am praying to God that the second course will help!
I am very grateful to everyone who donated money for Serezha's treatment.

Update as of April 27, 2010.
Serezha was discharged from the hospital, but a week later he
had to go back, because CT scan showed fungal infection in his
lungs and liver. The lungs were not affected as much, but the
liver needs much attention.
Today Serezha's mother traveled to Moscow and took his blood
for a test to find out what exactly caused the infection.
This test is not done in Belgorod, and without it effective
therapy cannot be prescribed. Sergei is now receiving antifungal
drugs with wide range of action.

Update as of May 20, 2010.
On May 7th Serezha was discharged from the hospital.
The fungal infection was taken under control. And today he needs
to return to Hematology unit for another cycle of chemotherapy
under the same protocol: FLAGIDA. A donor for Serezha
was not found yet.

Update as of June 16, 2010.
Serezha developed serious mucositis in his mouth. It is already
very advanced, and Serezha has swelling that covers most of his face.
Antibiotics are not helping and Serezha's temperature is
fluctuating daily.

Update as of June 17, 2010.
The situation is a little better today. Sergei's temperature is normal
and he can eat, but the swelling is still there. A donor
was found for Serezha!
As soon as he recovers, he will be invited to St. Petersburg for
an in-person consultation, after which the doctors will decide
on BMT date.

Update as of July 11, 2010.
Serezha is now at home. He feels relatively well, although he still
has swollen higher lip due to mucositis. He was confirmed for
transplantation based on a phone consultation with A.D. Kulagin.
It is planned for early August.
I have transferred payment for bone marrow donor
search to S. Morsch registry.
