Hello!
I am the mother of Sultan Rahmanaliev, a little boy from Kyrgyzstan.
It was the boy's grandmother who chose such a name for him: she wanted him
to be a healthy, strong and happy young man. But things went wrong: the little
one got seriously sick. When we moved here from Kyrgyzstan we did not yet know
anything. Our Sultan was absolutely healthy and never even had colds until he
was 4. My husband and I wanted to find jobs because in our country the unemployment
rate is too high, and we have to bring up two children. Our youngest son Erzhan
is 2.
We wanted Sultan to go to a kindergarten. It all began with a plain cold,
then he had complications and got to the intensive care unit of City Children's
Hospital 2. You can imagine what I felt when a tumor was suspected. The doctors
of the hospital suspected a malignant mediastinal tumor and helped us transfer
Sultan to Professor Petrov Oncology Institute. It was there that the diagnosis
was confirmed.
Until the very last moment I could not believe it. I was hoping (perhaps
just deceiving myself) that it was a mistake, that it could not be true,
because my boy had never got sick. I could not help thinking that it might
be due to a climate change. But the terrible diagnosis was confirmed. The
boy was feeling worse and worse. He could not breathe and had to get oxygen.
He lost a lot of weigh too. Lots of drugs, always connected to an IV drip...
What surprised everyone is that Sultan was strong and brave, the bravest boy
on earth. Never did he cry. The doctors do everything so that my son gets well,
and most importantly, they do not let him die. At present my son is getting
treatment at the oncology institute, but unfortunately the treatment has to
be paid for because we are citizens of another country. We have to pay for the
stay at hospital and the drugs too.
At first we were getting help from the hospice and just simple people, now it
is the AdVita charity fund that is helping us. Now I know for sure that the
people remained kind in spite of the hard times.
My husband was also doing all he could, but misfortune never comes alone. He
got a trauma at work, namely a hip fracture. He is now staying at home. I cannot
work because I am in hospital with Sultan all the time. A long and expensive
treatment course is still in store for us.
There is a God, and there are people who help. They want our boy to live. I will
never tell Sultan of his disease, let it remain a nightmare that is over. I know
that my boy will get well. I believe in it. I am asking all people who will be
moved by this letter to help us. My dearest dream is the same as the dream of all
mothers in the world: my son's good health, his happy smile and the ring of his
laughter.
Respectfully and gratefully,
Kutbubu Alyshevna Muratalieva,
mother of Sultan Rahmanaliev

Update as of February 13, 2009.
Sultan completed the first two chemotherapy courses. He has started to
eat and feels relatively well. The next course is scheduled for
February 28th.
Update as of August 8, 2009.
Dear friends! I apologize for not writing about Sultan for a long time.
In February we were unable to get admitted to the hospital due to quarantine
for chickenpox, and we started chemotherapy only after it was lifted. We
completed several courses of chemotherapy and on July 31 we were allowed to
leave the hospital for two weeks.
Sultan feels well. He runs around, laughs just like before, prior to his
illness! The next hospitalization will start on August 19th, and it will be
the last chemotherapy course under the protocol. I am deeply grateful to
Sultan's doctors and supporters of AdVita fund for saving my son's life!
God bless you!
Kutbubu, Sultan's mom
Update as of August 21, 2009.
Sultan feels well. Today he underwent testing and it showed that
he is in remission. Chemotherapy was not started yet, so Sultanchik
is running around and playing. If al goes well, without complications,
then at the end of September we will be allowed to go home.
Acel, Sultan's sister
Update as of October 2, 2009.
Due to infectious complications, the last chemotherapy course was postponed
and was administered only recently, at the end of September. On Monday,
Sultan will start a course of radiation that will be followed by control
testing. The boy feels well.
Update as of October 21, 2009.
Sultan urgently needs help from blood donors, up to 10 people
are required. His blood counts have plummeted. Sultan is fatigued,
but feels relatively well.
Update as of December 7, 2009.
Sultan was discharged and feels very well. He is very happy and
active. Soon he will be allowed to leave the hospital for a month,
and it may be his chance to go home to Kyrgyzstan where he has
not been back for two years.
The air travel is very expensive, however, and without the help
of supporters, Sultan's family will not be able to buy the tickets,
even though his mother has a job as a cleaner. The roundtrip
tickets will cost close to 36,000 rubles for the three of them.
We will be very grateful for any help.
Update as of December 25, 2009.
Sultan is taking Methotrexate and Purinethol, he is feeling fine and
is eating well. Maintenance chemotherapy has started and we were
discharged from hospital. Now we only have to go there for tests.
Update as of February 9, 2010.
We were coming for blood tests once a week. The blood counts stayed
good, so we were allowed to come for tests once a month.
Sultan feels well. If everything goes just as well for a year,
he will be taken off monitoring.
Sultan's aunt
Update as of July 3, 2010.
Sultan is continuing maintenance therapy with Purinethol and he feels
well. Based on results of planned tests, he is in remission.
