My name is Irina. I have two sons. My oldest Victor is 9 and Vadik is 3 years
old. Our happy family (my husband Victor, I and our children) live in Tikhvin
in Leningradskaya oblast.
In April 2009 on his birthday, our youngest son got sick with tonsillitis. He
was prescribed a course of antibiotics. However, he continued feeling unwell,
complained of fatigue and stomachaches. He had a blood test and with suspected
blood disease he was admitted first to Regional hospital in St. Petersburg,
and then to R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology and Transfusiology Institute.
Vadik was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
We have been at the Institute for the last 5 months. Our son completed three
courses of high-dosage chemotherapy and entered remission. He, of course,
had complications too: Vadik even spent several days in intensive care unit.
As of now, the difficult treatment period is behind us, but the treatment is
far from over. We need to regularly bring Vadik for tests and various studies.
In addition, twice a week he receives chemotherapy under doctor's monitoring.
Our son also needs Nutrizone nutrition that costs 12,000 rubles a month! My
husband is the only one who can work at this time and his salary, unfortunately,
cannot cover all the necessities. For this reason I am asking for help.

Update as of February 23, 2010.
Vadik completed radiation therapy. Once he recovers fully from
radiation therapy, he will need to have a year of maintenance therapy.
He is now at home, in Tikhvin. His mom found a nurse locally who
visits Vadik home to take tests and give him an injection of
Methotrexate, because he cannot go to the clinic with his low
immunity. Vadik does not feel very well: his leukocyte count
is low and he has a runny nose.
On March 5 Vadik needs to come to the institute for an examination.
Update as of April 3, 2010.
Since Monday Vadik has had high temperature (38-39C) that does
not go down. He was prescribed hormonal therapy. Vadik had a visit
to neuropathologist and was diagnosed with post-radiation
encephalopathy. He was prescribed Mexidol. For now, Vadik was
allowed to go home to Tikhvin. On Tuesday he needs to
return to R. Gorbacheva Institute for a consultation.
The supply of Nutridrink provided by our fund will last another month.
Update as of April 30, 2010.
Vadik completed tests and is continuing treatment.
Update as of May 23, 2010.
Vladik was already discharged from the hospital where he was due to
tonsillitis. He feels well. On Monday he will have a planned injection
of Methotrexate in Tikhvin where he lives.
Update as of July 27, 2010.
Vadik is continuing maintenance therapy with Methotrexate and hormones.
It will last for about a year longer. He feels rather well, but still
does not have an appetite and is not gaining weight. Vadik supplements
his diet with Nutridrink.
